What is ERW SCH 40 Pipe?

ERW SCH 40 Pipe is an Electric Resistance Welded Pipe. SCH 40 stands for a specific grade of pipe wall thickness. The production process of ERW welded pipes uses the skin effect and proximity effect of high-frequency current to quickly heat and melt the edge of the tube blank, and then pressure welding is achieved under the action of the extrusion roller to complete the forming of the tube. This process makes the weld formed by melting the base material of the steel strip body. The mechanical strength is better than that of ordinary welded pipes. It also has a smooth surface, high precision, low cost, and small weld excess height, which is conducive to subsequent coating such as 3PE anti-corrosion coating.

The “SCH” in SCH 40 is the abbreviation of Schedule, which represents the pipe schedule number, which is the ratio of the pipe design pressure to the allowable stress of the material at the design temperature multiplied by 1000 and rounded off. For different pipe diameters, the actual wall thickness of SCH 40 is different. For example, the wall thickness of a 2-inch SCH 40 pipe is approximately 3.91mm. This grade is widely used in pipeline systems and can adapt to a variety of medium and low pressure working environments, ensuring that the pipeline operates stably under normal working conditions and effectively transports various fluids such as water, gas, oil, etc.

ERW SCH 40 Pipe production process

The production of ERW SCH 40 Pipe starts with high-quality hot-rolled coils, which are first fed into a forming machine. The forming machine gradually bends the hot-rolled coils according to pre-designed dies to gradually form the shape of a round pipe blank. After the tube is formed, it enters the critical welding stage. Using the skin effect and proximity effect of high-frequency current, the edge of the tube is quickly heated to a molten state. Subsequently, under the strong pressure of the extrusion rollers, the melted edges are tightly fused to complete the welding and form a complete steel pipe. Finally, the welded steel pipes need to undergo subsequent processing steps such as sizing and straightening to further ensure the dimensional accuracy and straightness of the steel pipes, so that they fully comply with the SCH 40 standard requirements and can be put into various application scenarios with stable and reliable quality.

ERW SCH 40 Pipe performance advantages

  1. In terms of strength, ERW SCH 40 Pipe has excellent pressure resistance. The weld is made by melting and welding the base material of the steel strip, which gives the steel pipe a higher mechanical strength. It can effectively withstand the pressure and stress in the pipeline system, ensuring that during normal operation, there will be no rupture, deformation and other problems due to pressure factors. It can be stably used in various medium and low pressure fluid transportation scenarios.
  2. Precision is also a highlight. During the production process, advanced equipment and processes control the dimensions precisely. Whether it is the outer diameter, inner diameter or wall thickness, it can strictly comply with the tolerance range specified in the SCH 40 standard. When installing, high-precision pipes are more tightly connected and matched with other pipe fittings, reducing the risk of leakage due to dimensional deviations, while also improving the installation efficiency and stability of the entire piping system.
  3. Good corrosion resistance, usually high-quality carbon steel is used as raw material, which has a certain corrosion resistance. In some special application scenarios, it can also be further enhanced through subsequent treatment processes such as galvanizing and anti-corrosion coating, effectively resisting the erosion of various corrosive substances in the external environment, extending service life and reducing maintenance costs.
  4. In terms of surface quality, the outer surface of ERW SCH 40 Pipe is very smooth, without obvious scratches, pits and other defects. This not only improves the appearance of the pipe, but more importantly, the smooth surface can reduce the resistance during fluid transportation, reduce energy loss, and improve transportation efficiency. It is also conducive to the subsequent coating of various protective coatings on the pipeline to ensure the adhesion and integrity of the coating.

ERW SCH 40 Pipe application areas

  1. In the field of oil and gas transportation, it undertakes the important task of transporting oil and natural gas from the extraction site to the processing site or storage site.
  2. It is also commonly seen in building water supply and drainage systems. Its high-precision dimensions enable it to be precisely matched with other pipes during installation, ensuring smooth water flow and avoiding water leakage.
  3. In the machinery manufacturing industry, it is often used to manufacture hydraulic and pneumatic pipelines for various mechanical equipment. Its strength and dimensional accuracy meet the strict requirements of the mechanical system for pipelines.
  4. In the chemical industry, many chemical production processes require the transportation of corrosive liquids or gases. ERW SCH 40 Pipe can resist the corrosion of various chemical substances by selecting suitable materials and performing anti-corrosion treatment. It can safely and stably transport various chemical raw materials and products in chemical production, and meet the special needs of chemical processes for pipelines.
